Permaculture: Design for Healthy Building with Principles in Mind

Common Sense Prevails...

The shortest day of the year in Chile and the rain is coming down. It is cold and wet. As we celebrate the new year and the return of the sun, thousands of people in the surrounding region are living in government supplied shacks....affectionately termed ´´Mediagua´´ or half water. Most of them are leaking with the rain, and the wind is coming in. You can find photos here.

Letters from Chile: Visiting Dichato – the Town That Was

The Permculture Research Institute in Chile (Español)

Story and photos by Craig Mackintosh currently in El Manzano published on the Permaculture Research Institute Website. This is Part II of a series. Read Part I here.

A former beautiful, bustling and touristy coastal town in Chile clings to an uncertain future after being engulfed by the 2010 tsunami.

Permaculture and Transition Towns...Doing it Real in Chile

Investing in Transition (Español)

Please Get Behind Our Efforts to Demonstrate Sustainable Development and Relief for Chile Quake/Tsunami Victims

Editor’s Preamble:

Permaculturists famously endeavour to ‘turn the problem into a solution’. At the moment we have a tremendous opportunity to apply this principle in wonderful, productive ways in disaster-hit Chile.

The quake-tsunami combo that hit on February 27, 2010 has created a void just begging for sustainable relief and re-development. Grifen Hope and Javiera Carrión of Ecoescuela El Manzano, a partner organisation to the Permaculture Research Institute, are well positioned to fill that void with all kinds of permaculture goodness – in the form of low-cost environmentally friendly buildings, improved sanitation and nutrient cycling through construction of composting toilets, water harvesting systems and in education in home garden design, etc.

Water, Permaculture, Transition & Resilience

The Most Basic of Needs (Español)

Media AguaWe understand that a growing problem in disaster affected areas of Chile is access to clean drinking water. With the destruction of municipal water systems and widespread existing contamination of water resource in Chile, this is a fundamental priority for the disaster response, and the long term recovery. Here in El Manzano we have been asked to explore possibilties for; (a) water filters, (b) rainwater catchment, (c) pumps, and (d) storage tanks that can be applied in the emergency housing of Un Techo para Chile and friends (see photo) in the soon to be new Campamientos of Chile.

An Instant for Reflection

Prepared for the Worst (Español)

By Antonio Palma. In 2007, David Holmgren (co-creator of the concept of permaculture) conducted an intensive tour of Latin America and was able to broadcast live, where was welcomed their proposal PermaCultura joint as a design tool, but also reflection and discussion on the need for a transition to other more sustainable society.

Good News for a Change

Chile Shakes and the World Changes: by seconds and degrees

Hola Friends, We are just over a week out from the big shake, battened down the hatches and secured the sitution. We realise that we are blessed and uniquely prepared to make a big difference in the restoration of Bio Bio Chile.
